The Northside Church of Christ has a long history which is described below. Under the leadership of our elders, we are actively involved in teaching and preaching God's word in our community and in other parts of the world. Our congregation is made up of families, and individuals young and old who believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and want to worship and serve God. The Holy Bible is our guide and authority. 2 Timothy 3:16 "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in rightousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work". We worship on Sunday morning, evening, and on Wednesday nights. We want you to feel comfortable and welcome so the dress attire is casual. The church of Christ is part of "The Restoration Movement." Our goal is to "restore" the New Testament church in our time - to determine from the Bible what the church was like in the beginning, and to be like that. We believe this is a worthy and reverent goal. We invite you and your family to be a part of God's work here at Northside and look forward to getting to know you. No social or religious entity bursts full grown from its roots. The history of the Northside Church of Christ is no different. Many seeds have been planted by others. We are thus able to "drink from wells we have not dug and enjoy fruits from others' labors". In 1869 or 1870, the W.P. Brence family moved to Benton, Arkansas. There being no congregation of the Church of Christ in the area, they built a building and established a congregation, known as the Antioch Church in what is now the Silica Heights community. Around 1900 a new building was built and it was called the Silica Heights Church of Christ. In 1943, a group of Christians began to meet in the Saline County courthouse. Soon they decided to pool their money and purchased property at the corner of Market and Carpenter streets. Construction of a new building was begun on March 8, 1946 and discussions were begun regarding a merger of the Silica Heights, Pine Haven and the courthouse congregations at the new location. The discussions were successful and on October 6, 1946, the Northside Church of Christ was officially established. On that first Sunday, there were about 15 men, women, and children in attendance and the contribution was $24.23. Attendance and contributions have continued to increase and on April 5, 1955, Northside moved into it's present location at 917 North East Steet in Benton. By 1962, the facilities were outgrown and an annex was added to enlarge the seating capacity to 750. That provided the church with 18 classrooms plus two offices. In August, 1974, another addition including a new fellowship hall, library, and seven additional classrooms was completed. The old offices were used for storage and for dispensing clothing and food to needy families. Northside has been instrumental in spreading the Gospel of Christ in numerous other locations either through members going out from this congregation or through financial support to others. Presently, the church is in partial support of works in Huntingburg, Indiana; Jessieville, Arkansas; Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania; Glasgow, Scotland; Sfantu Gheorghe, Romania; and the Fishers of Men program. Part of the very first contribution of Northside was sent in support of Southern Christian Home, Morrillton, Arkansas. In addition, monthly support is sent to the Children's Home in Paragould and the Herald of Truth broadcast. The Northside Church of Christ has had a long and active history. Its roots extend back into the restoration movement of the 18th and 19th centuries and to the present days of rapid communication. But the message of God is the same - "Speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where the Bible is silent". |
